An Orange Moon Special Guest @ Antique Show 8/7/2011


Okay--everyone knows us as hard core Mid Century Modernists, but Sunday I did the show at the Rebuilding Exchange! Just felt the need to go back to my Maxwell Street roots! I totally stepped out of my "Modernist" comfort zone & sold an assortment of jewelry, dish ware, silver, artwork & home accessories! Pssst--we offer these items at AOM, but they are displayed in the BACK ROOM! The REALLY REGULAR customers know about it. I'm just saying...
Anywho, that morning the heavens opened up & it rained like hell! I politely climbed into my truck turned on the air, drank my coffee & chilled! Thank goodness Mother Nature gave us a play! An hour later the sun came out big and bold, and so did the customers!

Look at this dynamite Sideboard! Yes its a TRUE sideboard--it boast doors on both sides, with shelves inside. Its made of solid Walnut, sculptural Brass handles, and was designed by famed architect Oscar Niemeyer for Broyhill’s Brasilia collection.
Broyhill is now believed to have a CULT FOLLOWING, & IS WILDLY SOUGHT AFTER! There are entire sites devoted to these pieces!

Did you hear? The pilot got picked up! It airs soon on Channel 5 NBC. AOM is honored to be a part of this historic venture. While we think of Hef as a playboy only, he was doing some amazing things for the world back in the day. Did you know that Hef once sent his Playboy bunny jet to airlift a group of orphaned babies from Vietnam during the war? He enlisted his Playboy bunnies to fly from San Francisco to New York to make sure the children arrived safely. I'm sure that was a sight to behold! Thank you Hef! & Thank you to Twentieth Century Fox, Tricia, Andrew & the UNION movers for allowing An Orange Moon to help with the set design! Beauchamp if you're reading this, please fly us out to LA. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

HELLO WORLD! I AM HOME!


Yes I am home! I was away at the spa for two glorious weeks! I hiked on some famous trail along the river bank. Took in the scenery and learned how to breathe. Saw giant bunny rabbits & deer in the outback, and chipmunks!! They were soooo cute...I stumbled upon a great private cook-out in a cabin by a lovely rocky stream. The hill was steep! I hiked it against my better judgement. The winding path really couldn't accommodate hikers and vehicles at the same time, so in that instance, I learned patience, said "whats up" to a Forest Ranger--FYI, they still rock a complete uniform. Their doppelganger is the LAPD!!  
The first morning I was out by the pool talking to Ty, there was no Internet connection & cell phone use was prohibited indoors. He stated "wow those birds are super loud!" I replied,"I know as they squawked their loudest. We found ourselves shouting & laughing over the caw-caw-caw of winged creatures in their natural habitat. During our phone call I looked up into the early morning sun, it was at that moment I knew--
 you can take the girl out of the city...
First morning back at AOM!

But what an adventure! May I share some things I learned about myself during my Eat, Pray, Love expedition?

1. I did everything I set out to do, and more! Hiked, laid out in a hammock, actually looked up at the sky until I fell asleep. Felt good about and looked forward to napping, ate well, drank h20 like it was going out of style. This one is a biggie folks--HAD NO SUGAR FOR 2 WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! YIKES! Yeah, yeah, I'm better for it!

2. I'm totally weirded out about the amount of litter in the city of Chicago. While on an excursion into town, I noticed a McDonald's bag in the middle of the road! Someone threw a McDonald's bag out of the window. The only litter for 50 blocks around. Please people, DON'T BE A LITTER BUG! CAUSE EVERY LITTER BIT HURTS! Ok, might I add, this is my first true experience of culture shock!

3.Figured out when the schedule said outing, it meant hiking clothes, NOT PARTY CLOTHES!! 8)

4. LEARNED HOW TO DO A KILLER SOUTHERN ACCENT--YALL! Learned the difference between a "bag & a sack," a "soda & a pop," & instead of saying "hello, how are you today," just say "all-right." 

5. Mad LOVE to the "Master Modernist" Ty McDaniel for "digging back into his psychological stack," and seeing the signs of physical decompensation; and insisting I cut-out, and stay as long as I want to.

6.Thanks to the women at the spa, that helped me get my groove back! The day we snuck away from the regularly scheduled program and grooved to T.I.'s "What You Know About This," Ciara's, "OH," Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," with a little Stones thrown in for good measure, had to be one of my greatest learning experiences. It taught me to slow down a little bit "gym shoe," smell the roses, but keep it funky! 

Ok. Tons more happened, like watching "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," great film again. Experiencing foot pain like you can't imagine from excessive hiking. (I LOVED IT!)  Flying FIRST CLASS! ALL THE COCKTAILS YOU CAN DRINK FOR NADA!! FIRST ON AND FIRST OFF THE PLANE! Ok, that's superficial nonsense ;-D The best part was coming HOME! It's strange isn't it? I needed to get away, but on the flight home, my heart was beating a million miles a minute. I was going to see my husband! My city, my home, my customers...If you've never been to AOM, we sell fantastic furniture, AND we vibe hard!! Music, Tequila, MCM...but coming home...I stepped off the plane and waiting for me in arrivals was Ty. I looked deep into his eyes before we kissed. I am home...

BREAK-EE POOH...


SPA FOR 2 WEEKS...


DESIGN STARS, ARTISTS, MODERNIST, ROCKERS & LOVERS of all we do--
What-Is-Up?
 Yes, I am taking a "Break-ee Pooh." Translation? I'm at away at a spa for two weeks. After the store expansion in January, the Citizen Shay Art show, The Chicago Historic Bungalow Exposition, The Mayor Daley Ward Appreciation Event, The Brooks Estate Sale, the IRA Recycling Conference, designing our new website & An Orange Moon in general, we decided I take a moment to allow the sun to kiss my face, dangle my feet in a stream, loll in an over sized hammock & try to spot a Nimbostratus cloud--hike--NOT CAMP!, bike, a couple of mango sugar scrubs, a high protein/zero fat diet & I'm good to go!!

In case you didn't know, I LOVE my celebrities & am on the look-out. So far nothing, but I think I saw HALLE BERRY on the plane!! The reports say she travels "First Class" always with a blanket over her face. This lady drank her cocktails under the blanket, peeked out to speak to the flight attendant with blanket still covering her face, and had the blanket covering her when she exited first! Uh--CREEPY MUCH?

HOME AGAIN, HOME AGAIN JIGGITY JIG!






YES! We're ba-ack!

We are back from the Illinois Recycling Association Conference & our anniversary get-a-way! It was so nice to get a way for just a moment.
Springfield was sweet & quaint. Loved the architecture!!

 Good part: Our segment on "upcycling vintage furniture." ;-p
AND realizing the awesome level of creativity recycling allows.This year the conference had vendors set up in the lobby of the Springfield Hilton selling recycled EVERYTHING!! One of the vendors displayed a bust that looked like it was solid bronze. She asked me what I thought it was made of? I couldn't belive it when she replied, "dryer lint." OMG! IT WAS STUNNING!!

Better part: Driving around Springfield (toooo hot to walk) admiring the architecture & gathering mid century modern furniture to bring back home--to Chicago--for you!

1970's Chocolate Orange Swirl Sofa


Are you working with a designer or space planner? Do you have a space that can accommodate this work of art? Then be sure to let them know about this crazy, sexy, cool psychedelic sofa circa 1970.
It looks as if it could be right off the set of
"Blow, Goodfellas or Superfly yo!"  
The label says "Founder of Thomasville," and it sits on a Black solid wood plinth base. The chocolate & orange fabric is velvet, and the cream and taupe appears to be raw silk. I don't have to tell you that sofas of this magnitude are SPECIAL ORDER.
