FULL MOON
Vintage dealer Lynne McDaniel has really got it going on this weekend, conducting a two-day liquidation estate sale (7/30-31) on top of holding the third annual half-off sale at An Orange Moon (7/29-31), the smartly curated Southside furniture shop she runs with her husband, Ty. When Lynne holds a sale, the discounts are refreshingly plain and simple: take 50 percent off everything in the store (and get free home delivery if you mention Domestica). Orange Moon is located at 2436 West 59th Street, and the sale rises tomorrow and sets on Sunday afternoon. The off-site home sale will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 8–4, at 8514 South Karlov Street in the Scottsdale neighborhood, and there will be lots of mid-century trappings, including Heywood Wakefield bamboo furniture, tiki kitsch, jewelry and art, dishes, and memorabilia. -Bradley Lincoln Chicago Home & Garden "Domestica" Blog
Beverly Loot
There’s an estate sale of some historic significance going on in the Beverly neighborhood this weekend. Mayor Daley gave the owner, respected music teacher Sydonia Brooks, her own day, and she was 1990’s Distinguished Woman of the Year in Music, and she and her husband were avid collectors of 1960s furniture, musical instruments, and haute couture (lots of fun hats, I’m told). The sale is being conducted by An Orange Moon, and it’s going down at 9105 South Perry Avenue tomorrow and Saturday, 7:45 to 2:00. Orange Moon turned two years old this month, and owners Lynne and Ty McDaniel’s seven-year wedding anniversary is next week, so there’s a lot of lunar celebrating going on.

"I Met Andy Warhol "
"In the future, everybody will be world famous for 15 minutes."
Met him in the subway at Chicago Ave. & State. It was 6:30am on a Saturday morning. The train was pulling into the station as I stood and pulled my duffle bag tight. I was sipping a cup of coffee, trying to get myself together for an early morning ballet class. I peered over my cup at the uncomfortable site amongst the subway tile. I knew it was him immediately. There he stood... dressed in his typical attire--a Brooks Brothers crumpled trench coat, biscuit-toed Italian leather flats & a platinum, short "Goldie Hawn" styled wig. He sported his signature scowl he developed in his later years. He walked slowly to the train doors with his hands jammed hard in his pockets. As the train stopped, we were eye to eye... as the doors opened. I moved my duffle bag to the side and tried to step off the train onto the platform, but he wouldn't move. It was almost as if he was searching for his prey of the day, and I was it! I hit him hard in the abdomen... and he let out a small gasp. Those of you that know me well, know that I'm not civil until I've had my first cup of Joe. I'm better now, but then, not so much. Not to worry, Andy quickly regained his composure and stepped to the side. No longer did I need coffee, my adrenaline had kicked in. I exited the train and watched the other girls from my ballet class race up the stairs. Instinctively I turned and look back... He stood erect and tried to regain his composure. I walked slowly over to him as he re-arranged his wig and smoothed his trench coat. "Are you okay?"I asked him. He nodded in such a sad little way, I could no longer be angry. There we stood on the train platform of the subway that smelled faintly of urine & train engines at no o'clock on a beautiful summer morning. I extended my hand to him and introduced myself. "Hi, I'm Lynne Rousseau."
My daughter and I visited the store and found it to be charming with many different mid-century pieces to choose from. The owners, Lynn and Ty are super nice and helpful. We felt like we had known them for years and learned some interesting stories from Lynn's "new career" as celebrity on the TLC reality show, "What the Sell." I found two awesome mid-century lamps and a fabulous settee (for my daughter's apt.) which have already enhanced the look of our homes.

History
Established May 1, 2009.
My Mom was a graduate of Vogue when it was on the corner of Chicago Ave & Michigan. My Dad took us to Maxwell Street every Sunday after church, and before Grandmothers house. We trolled the Merchandise Mart with our parents on lazy Saturday afternoons. Our mother was always on the hunt for "Oriental" furniture, lamps and rugs for our Southside home. Then there were the trips to the Art Institute, Opera Houses, & all the museums in town. This helped prepare me for An Orange Moon. I've been buying and selling Mid Century Modern, Art, Industrial, French, Italian, & Victorian for several years. Then I had a light bulb moment. Enough of working as a Clinical Therapist and Chicago Public School teacher. Why not follow my passion and do my GREEN thing? We saved every penny, found a space in Gage Park, cleaned, primed and painted and 30 days later, An Orange Moon was born!
Meet the Business Owner: Lynne M.
I love great design, color and everyone's ability to see things just a little differently. Notice I always start my Craigslist ads & posts with "Design Stars"... I love the fact that we are simply trying to feather our nests, and make life a little less brutal after a tough day in the world. Now where do we go to make it happen? To the Southside. Hell, we'll travel anywhere there are goodies, right? I'm Lynne McDaniel, and I make it happen. If you need to email me and discuss where should you go to find Mid Century Modern fabric? Do it. You are considering swapping out the sofa you purchased two months ago because now you are in a different place design wise, do it. I am with you! Or you just purchased your first Condo, Loft or Apartment and need furniture. Come in, sit down, drink an ice cold Corona, have a quick shot of Cazadores Tequila, while looking to see which of the 5 Mid Century Modern Credenzas you want delivered. An Orange Moon. Re-mixed & Re-imagined. Ciao, "L"
MY SECRETS
Fabric Stores
Textile Outlet 2121 W. 21st Street
They have a HUGE fabric selection, so have an idea of what you're looking for before you go in; otherwise the selection can be overwhelming. TIP! Sneak in your own scissors for swatches. This is a warehouse. The prices reflect that, and the help is scarce.
Lampshades
Benko's
They have 61 years in the biz, and it shows! This shop specializes in helping you pull together your investment pieces! They are straight old school! Snag a mid century modern lamp from AOM, but need a KILLER shade? This is the place! Not on the floor? THEY HAVE LADIES IN THE BACK THAT CAN MAKE IT!! IN ANY COLOR OR FABRIC!! HELL, BRING YOUR OWN!! Ok, give me a second to pull myself together...they are da bomb. PS. Do not go in like a novice, without your lamp, they don't have time for games. Their customer base consist of people like the "Pritzkers," the "Kennedys," & the "MCDANIELS." Add your name to the list. Tell them we sent you!
A LAMP & FIXTURE SHOPPE
On the flip! 3181 N. Elston Ave. John the owner & Sandy (28 years)on the floor. Used this company when they were on Fullerton near DePaul(my alma mater). Just bought 10 shades from them Thursday. I couldn't help it. Same deal as Benko's but A LAMP is a bit more user friendly. E.g., you can bring your lamp in, sit it up on the lamp bar in front of store, and Sandy assists you with lampshade selection by holding a lit bulb under the shade/s you select. That way you get a perfect idea of the effect. Finials, harps & lamp pieces are at your fingertips. You can actually reach in the case and put your own lamp together under Sandy's guidance. Reaching back into my clinical sack, I'd say this shop is OCD to the mizzle! And in this case, thats an excellent thing!! Again, tell them AOM sent you for a better price. AND SERVICE! *TIP Buy whats on the floor. Special orders are 4-6 week, but helleva worth it!!

Orange Moon Rising By Bradley Lincoln
To celebrate el Ano Nuevo, the substantial expansion of her Chicago Lawn vintage furniture store An Orange Moon, and just simply life itself, owner Lynne McDaniel is throwing a party this Friday and it's destined to be a doozy. From 6-10p.m. there will be complimentary potent potables and cupcakes, a dance floor driven by music from DJ T-Mac, and (promptly at 9:00) a participatory live-music show with a female impersonating emcee, where Lynne promises to bust out some Erykah Badu covers and encourages audience members to show off a number or two themselves. Factor in all the mid-century modern furniture, artwork, and bric-a-brac, and tomorrow sounds like a mash-up of Antiques Roadshow, America's Got Talent, and Mr. Warhol's Factory(except there most likely won't be anyone dozing off in the corner). There'll be same-night delivery for those instant-gratification types, and-as always at An Orange Moon-free parking. And as a cherry-topping bonus for Domestica readers, an extra 10 percent off all purchases. The store is located at 2434-36 West 59th. On the beautiful Southside of Chicago!
********* AOM 2010 year in review *************** **
***Grey Gardens*** I felt like I had a role in the above mentioned film. I liquidated a famous estate that was very similar. You remember? I wore gloves, boots and a mask and asked all participants to do the same. Click GREY GARDENS for film in its entirety. While away on holiday our daughter suggested all the history and furniture lovers in the house check it out. I made 3 huge pitchers of "Golden Magaritas" and we all settled in.
Its a story about Jackie Onassis and her "exccentric" high society drop-out cousins. It totally weirded me out, yet I couldn't stop looking atthe architecture of their East Hampton mansion, the vintage clothing & fab furniture.
I'd like to view the original documentary, research the mansion they lived in, and try to find the photo that created such a stir. Back in the day a photographer got a great shot of Aristotle Onassis kissing Maria Callas' dog on the mouth while sailing a little boat on the Greek isles. I think--correct me if I'm wrong--he was dating Jackie O at the time! Scathingly scandalous... ;-)

THE CITIZEN SHAY SHOW
"With an eye on the past, CitizenShay (aka Steve Shay) creates art from things old and new, with the goal of adding an element of comfort and beauty to people's lives. His education in graphic design largely influences his artwork; from creating scaled-up pixels to assembling distressed collages, he uses paint, pencil, marker, images from vintage magazines and advertisements to compose visually compelling stories from the familiar. This ain't some fancy fine art, people – that's not his style. The work reads as collectively modern yet vintage – loosely assembled but strategically laid out – colorful but simple. Never one to be satisfied, CitizenShay’s artistic process changes as quickly as his mind, resulting in different series that vary stylistically, but have a consistent feel.” Save the date! Word Up
Buy a new shade for your vintage lamp. It really makes all the difference in the world!
I get this question alot. "Is this solid wood?" How do I answer this? Vintage furniture usually is. May have a thin veneer, but it is SOLID WOOD! New furniture--made of paper & pressboard. Thats sawdust & a glue mix. Yummy.
All furniture is not created equal! If your designer sends you to Target or Walmart for a Credenza or Highboy, drop them with the quickness!
